Dr. Sergio Torres is an associate professor at Westlake University. Previously he was a lecturer (assistant professor) in applied mathematics at the University of Queensland Australia followed by a Senior Lecturer (associate professor) position at the University of Liverpool UK.
In this talk he is going to show the developments he and his PhD students have achieved in the Multi-physics and Multi-scale Modelling (M3) of soils. In M3, the air, water and solid phases are detailed simulated to obtain the constitutive behaviour of soils. Techniques from solid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics and particle methods are used to achieve these goals. Although M3 approaches are inherently slow, Dr. Torres research have proven that they can offer insight and practical solutions to engineering problems.
